Appointment FAQ

How does airbrush tanning work?

The active ingredient in spray tan solution is DHA, Dihydroxyacetone. DHA is a simple carbohydrate that is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane. When applied, DHA reacts with dead cells in the skin's surface layer to temporarily darken the skin and simulate a tan.

How long do airbrush tans last?

On average, airbrush tans last anywhere from 7-10 days, and depend heavily on pre-appointment preparation and post-appointment care. We educate our clients before their appointment on how to prepare their skin and after their appointment on how to care for their color and so they can maximize the life of the tan.

Do I have to get naked?

Of course not! But many do. Our clients are encouraged to wear what they feel most comfortable wearing. That said, about 60% of our clients wear underwear on bottom and about 40% go fully nude. The advantage to going nude, no tan lines. The advantage to wearing a little clothing, you can see how great the tan looks compared to your untanned skin.

How do I best prepare for my Glow Girl Color Bar appointment?

It’s ideal to shave/wax (no later than 12 hours prior to your appointment) and extremely important to exfoliate prior to your appointment (24-48 hours prior) using a dry brush or exfoliating tool. If you don’t have exfoliant at your house, you can place some sugar in your hands and combine with your body wash (avoid Dove and Olay products), that’ll help rid the layer of dulling skin cells. When exfoliating, pay close attention to dry areas of the body, such as your hands and feet. We ask our clients to arrive with fresh skin, no makeup or serums/moisturizer. That said, if you have any product on your skin, we always have fresh cleansing wipes available for you.

Will the airbrush tan stain my clothing?

After your tan has developed and you've rinsed, no. The active ingredient in tanning solution, DHA, is clear, it's the cosmetic bronzer that is applied during the application that can stain clothing. That's why we advise all clients bring loose, dark clothing to wear after their appointment. As with other makeup, if a little gets on your clothing while you are developing, it comes out in the wash. Once your tan has developed you will rinse in the shower, removing all the bronzer from your skin.

Do you have a brick and mortar? What is the Glowmobile?

No, we come to you! We designed the first airbrush tanning salon, the Glowmobile (pronounced like Batmobile), in a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van to provide you with the convenience and comfort of a mobile tan, but with the style and sophistication of a salon experience. The Glowmobile travels across the country for various pop-up events, VIP clients, and corporate/private events.

Are airbrush tans safe for pregnant women?

We see pregnant women through all stages of their pregnancy including right before labor. Airbrush tans can serve as temporary makeup and help our clients feel their best when they don't have the time or energy to get ready for photos and visitors  We advise our clients to speak with their doctors prior to booking an appointment.

How do I take care of my airbrush tan?

Treat your tan with TLC. Since the tan has developed on the top layer of your skin it's important to be extra gentle when drying off with your towel (patting instead of rubbing) and avoiding products that are harsh on the skin, most anti-aging products, Retin-A, toner, makeup remover,  and products that contain AHA's, BHA's, and Vitamin-C Serums. You will want to avoid exfoliating and waxing until you're finished with the color. Finally, it's important to keep your skin moisturized by applying lotion after you get out of any water-shower, bath, pool, ocean.

Do guys get airbrush tans?

All the time. Just like women, men want to look and feel their best and everyone feels better with a tan. The damage and harmful effects that come with UV tans (sun or bed) impact men just as much as women and no one wants a tan that's damaging.
